TAPE CAMP
A Weekend Of Hands-On Analog Recording And Networking!
The two-day workshop (Sat & Sun) is limited to ten people and the third day, which focuses exclusively on tape machine alignment, is limited to five people. We keep the attendance numbers small to provide a truly unique experience, and our discussions are tailored depending on what you want to learn!
Spring 2026 Tape - Camp April 18-20, 2026
SATURDAY (10am-6pm)
The morning will be spend learning about all aspects of Welcome To 1979 and Mara Machines. We will visit the mastering suites and our analog tape archiving room too. No stone will be left unturned! We'll also take time to learn about each other's backgrounds and goals for the weekend. After lunch we will demonstrate the differences and similarities between analog and digital recording. We will set up a vast array of analog reverbs (plates, delays, echo chambers) and discuss how to better use your own recording setups in a more “analog” way.
SATURDAY NIGHT (7pm-9pm)
Vinyl cutting and production! This takes place in our lacquer cutting suite and is hosted by our vinyl mastering engineer Margaret Luthar. It is an in-depth look into the vinyl world.
SUNDAY (10am-6pm)
A full band comes in we can try all of our newfound techniques on. Everyone gets to engineer, assist, tape op, punch-in, and really learn how to use our Mara Machines to their fullest! At the end of the weekend you’ll be able to take the digital files (transferred from tape) home to play with in your own recording setup!
MONDAY (10am-5pm)
We focus solely on the art and science of tape machine alignment. The fundamentals of elevated levels, bias, and head alignments will be thoroughly explained. After an alignment is demonstrated to the group, each person will align the machine with guidance.
VINYL CAMP
A Weekend Of Hands-On Vinyl Mastering/Recording And Networking!
The two-day workshop (Sat & Sun) is limited to only TEN people. We keep the attendance numbers small to provide a truly unique experience, and our discussions are designed to involve everyone regardless of experience level!
2026 Vinyl Camp:
Dates TBA
SATURDAY (10am-6pm)
The day will be spent learning about every aspect of Welcome To 1979 studio, including our mastering suites, tape archival department and Mara Machines. We'll also take time to learn about each other's backgrounds and goals for the weekend. Towards the end of the day you will spend time in our vinyl mastering suite with our mastering team to learn all about vinyl mastering in preparation for Sunday's activities.
SUNDAY (10am-6pm)
We will be recording a band live to vinyl! You will help decide which microphones will be used, setup and patch all equipment. Then we will all help to get the sounds dialed in. Before the needle drops we'll send half the group into the vinyl mastering suite to assist our mastering team, the other half will stay in the control room to help with the mixing. We'll switch for side B of the live to vinyl so everyone gets to see both ends of the process. This kind of recording experience ONLY happens at Welcome To 1979!!!
